The Problem of Classification of Academic Disciplines

in Academic

Academic disciplines are that fields of human knowledge which students study at universities and colleges. The range of the disciplines is very wide. Each of them has its methods, objects, subjects, and categories.

The attempts of discipline classification

The attempts to classify all academic disciplines were made lots of times. But there is no one general classification of academic disciplines. Different researchers take different bases of their organizations. However the majority of them have some identical features.

The Approximate Classification of Academic Disciplines

Here one can find approximate classification of academic disciplines. First of all, academic disciplines are subdivided according to the principle of exactitude. Consequently such disciplines are arranged into three subgroups:

  1. Fine Arts which include such disciplines as Art, Music, Theater, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, and etc. The task of Fine Arts is to evaluate the human activity from the aesthetic point of view.

  2. Humanities which are History, Language, Literature, Philosophy, Religion, and etc.

This subgroup also has its own task which is to comprehend a human creature as a unique phenomenon.

  1. Social Sciences are Anthropology, Archeology, area Studies, Cultural and Ethnic Studies, Economics, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology. The aim of this group of academic disciplines is to investigate social role of a human and the results of human's activities. Social Sciences are divided into General and Concrete Sciences. General disciplines explore general human activity, and Concrete Sciences investigate human's activities in a concrete situation.

  2. Sciences include Chemistry, Astronomy, Botany, Biology, and etc. The task of this group is to explore the nature.

  3. Mathematics covers such disciplines as Computer Sciences, Logic, Mathematics, Statistics, and etc.

The aim of this branch of knowledge is to explore and systemize abstract notions and relations between them.
